History of the Lumbee Pinecone Patchwork
The pinecone patchwork design is derived from the bottom of the long leaf pinecone which is prevalent in NC. Dating back to the 1800’s, Lumbee women utilized this design in artistry such as quilts and rugs. In 1993, the Lumbee patchwork traditional regalia was designed for Miss Lumbee by Hayes Alan Locklear and created by Kat Littleturtle. Today, it remains a standard for the Lumbee Misses.

Overtime, this symbol has become the insignia for the Lumbee people and it can be found throughout Lumbee culture including UNC Pembroke's Native American Resource Center, powwows, jewelry, and various art and crafts. James Malcolm now offers the Pinecone Patchwork in a contemporary art form.
